Roberto González Fernández

Roberto González Fernández (Monforte de Lemos, Lugo, 1948) is a Spanish painter. He studied at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid between 1969 and 1974, and in 1977 he moved to Edinburgh (Scotland). From then on until today he lives off his painting, alternating seasons in the Scottish capital and in Madrid, with occasional visits and exhibitions in Galicia. In 1984 he was awarded a grant from The New York Foundation for the Arts. Although fundamentally a painter, Roberto González has also worked with photography and digital formats, although to a lesser extent. his painting is of great formal realism, although the theme incorporates content of protest, ironic or dreamlike, with a base in which the figure of the human body is usually present. Homosexuality and the treatment of homoeroticism are also keys to his work. His career is very prolific and he has had many solo exhibitions, as well as group exhibitions. his first show was in 1967, at the Coruña Artes gallery. Many of these exhibitions took place in Scotland and the United Kingdom, where he exhibits annually, and others in various cities in Spain. In November 2008 he held an anthological exhibition in Ferrol, with some 300 works from his entire career as a creator. His work is part of important Galician collections (Caixanova Collection, La Coruña County Council, La Coruña Museum of Fine Arts), Scottish (Edinburgh City Art Center, Hunterian Museum and Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow) and Spanish (Argentaria Foundation, Community of Madrid), as well as other art centers in the world (Forbes Collection in New York) and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London), among others.
