He was born on January 10, 1924 in San Sebastián. His first exhibition was held in Paris in 1950, the year he married Pilar Belzunce. He has received almost all the existing awards throughout his life: from the Venice Biennale to the Kandinsky, from the Wilhem Lehmbruck to the Prince of Asturias, from the German Kaiserring to the Imperial Prize in Japan. His work is present in more than twenty museums around the world, and retrospective exhibitions have been held in Houston and Berlin, Madrid and Caracas, London and Palermo. His sculptures are found facing the sea as in San Sebastián, or on the mountain as in Japan, and in cities such as Washington, Paris, Lund, Munster, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Guernica or Berlin.
